When the Spartans developed their professional armies they first began by setting singularity in the form of a “uniform”. The typical Spartan soldier would wear a crimson cape and their bronze shield would have the letter Lambda. The Spartans were the first of the Greeks to develop the first full-time professional army. Spartans began their training at age 7 and was educated in military strategy, battle training, and socialization by the programs sponsored by the state. With the development of bronze and iron the Greek weapons of choose was the spear called the Doru which was between 7 and 9 feet in length made from cornel would which is so dense it sinks in water. The tip was a leaf shaped spear head made out of iron or bronze and the butt of the spear called the Sauroter or “Lizard killer” was a bronze spike. The shield of the Greek soldier called a Hoplite or their Hoplon shields or Aspis were made from wood with a bronze outer layer and weighed approximately 30 pounds. In the case their spears broke or were lost the hoplites would use short swords which the Spartans modified to be shorter than the standard Greek sword called the Xiphos usually about 2 feet long and the Spartan Xiphos being 12 to 18 inches. The other sword employed was the Kopis which was more of a hacking sword with a curved edge both swords were made of iron. These weapons developed the strategic battle formation of the Phalanx. It was Not until Alexander the Great that this Strategy accompanied by a fierce cavalry that the world will be open to Science and Growth in Technology.
